Steel spline processing methods

2023-11-03 14:52

There are many processing methods for spline shafts. Mainly using cutting methods such as rolling, milling, and grinding, as well as plastic deformation processing methods such as cold stamping and cold rolling.

1. Rolling cutting method: Using a spline hob to process on a spline shaft milling machine or gear hobbing machine according to the generative method, this method has high productivity and accuracy, and is suitable for mass production.

2. Milling method: On a universal milling machine, a specialized forming milling cutter is used to directly mill the contour between teeth, and a indexing head is used to divide the teeth and mill them one by one; If a forming milling cutter is not used, two disc milling cutters can also be used to simultaneously mill both sides of a tooth. After milling each tooth, a disc milling cutter can be used to slightly adjust the bottom diameter. The productivity and accuracy of the milling method are relatively low, mainly used in single piece and small batch production to process spline shafts centered on the outer diameter and rough machining before quenching.

3. Grinding method: Use a formed grinding wheel to grind the side and bottom diameter of the spline teeth on a spline shaft grinder, suitable for machining hardened spline shafts or those with higher precision requirements, especially those centered on the inner diameter.

4. Cold tapping method: performed on a specialized machine tool. Two punch heads symmetrically arranged on the outer circumference of the workpiece rotate at a constant speed ratio with the indexing rotation motion and axial feed of the workpiece. The forming punch wheel on the punch head hammers the tooth groove of the workpiece once every one tooth of the workpiece rotates. Under the high-speed and high-energy continuous hammering of the punch wheel, the surface of the workpiece undergoes plastic deformation and becomes a spline. The accuracy of cold tapping is between milling and grinding, with an efficiency about 5 times higher than milling. Cold tapping can also improve material utilization. The above introduction is a detailed explanation of the machining method for spline shafts.
