Free cutting steel 1215 (rough, cold drawn, and precision drawn round) is a hot rolled cold drawn strip steel and steel wire suitable for cutting and automatic goods production by adding sulfur element to the steel, making it easy to cut. This type of steel can be machined with higher cutting speeds and greater cutting depths. Due to the addition of easy cutting elements in steel, the cutting resistance of the steel is reduced. At the same time, the characteristics of the easy cutting elements themselves and the formed compounds play a role in lubricating the cutting tool, making it easy to break chips and reducing wear, thereby reducing the surface roughness of the workpiece, improving tool life and production efficiency. With the continuous development of mechanical cutting towards automation, high-speed, and precision, higher requirements have been put forward for the machinability of materials, leading to the emergence of lead sulfur composite free cutting steel with better machinability, also known as ultra free cutting steel. Afterwards, various lead sulfur binary and multicomponent composite free cutting steels were successively introduced.
